Snapper fishing is a lot of fun, if everything is done right you usually get bit shortly after getting to the bottom. We like to then reel slowly for the first few feet then pick up the speed as the rod loads.
Technique is very simple for the angler, drop the lead to the bottom and let it sit with a little bit of tension and wait until you feel the pecks of multiple fish hitting the bait. We prefer small cut baits of bonito, barracuda, or squid. If the current is over 2 knots, we usually stick to another form of fishing entirely. For lead we like using 2-4 pounds depending on the current. These rigs are about 6 feet long and have 5 hooks with a snap swivel on the bottom which connects to the weight. As far as the rig is concerned, we like using chicken rigs with 80 pound monofilament and 6/0 circle hooks. Some fisherman prefer electric reels but yelloweye snapper can be targeted in shallow enough water where you can get away with either. The important part is to spool these rods with at least 300 yards of 50 pound braid so you can get to the bottom with less lead and feel the bite. As far as tackle is concerned, we like using 20-40 pound class rods and reels (spinning or conventional works). After marking an area that looks promising, the next step is getting baits to the bottom. While using the bottom lock setting (zoom) look for areas in the 250-500 foot depth where you mark bait and rock piles or other forms of structure. To find them, you must have a depth sounder paired with a minimum 1kw transducer. The most important aspect of targeting yellow-eye snapper is pinpointing areas where they congregate. Yellowtailing is not a catch and release fishery, as they have delicious white fillets that never go to waste. Yellowtail Snapper range from 12" to 5lbs, with average fish ranging from 1-2lb range. The best snapper fishing is usually enjoyed during summer. If there is a strong current, jig heads or split shots can be employed to get baits down to the strike zone. Small pilchards, chunks of bonito, or silversides are the best baits but just about anything will work if they are chummed up. Yellowtail can be caught during the day as well, though they are much more aggressive at night. The largest snapper shy away from poorly presented baits. We use small hooks, jigheads, and light leader (20lb test) for the best action from finicky fish. Best Rigs and Bait for Yellowtail Snapper if it's light, the deeper range is usually your best bet. If the current is ripping, we prefer going a little shallower. This way you can move around depending on the current. It definitely helps to have a handful of different spots in the 40-90 foot depth. The chum brings in the fish and the oats cloud the water which can the tails bite even when it's crystal clear.Ĭurrent helps for this fishery so the chum successfully flows away from the boat and disperses across the reef. We give the mixture ample time to melt, add water, and when we get to the spot we like to ladle it out every minute or so. We like to use a mixture of oats and chum in a 30 gallon garbage can. Chum gets the snapper frenzied enough to sit right off the stern of the boat (even in 100+ ft depths).

They can be targeted with light tackle by free lining small baits back into the chum slick. After anchoring, yellowtail are brought up from the bottom with an obscene amount of chum.
